As a senior citizen, you know that keeping on top of your physical and mental health can be both time-consuming and challenging. Yet there are ways to manage your health, improve your quality of life, and enjoy your days to the fullest. Read on for a few tips and tricks to discovering a happier, healthier you.


Diet and Exercise

It may sound cliche, but you really can take charge of your health by eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Your best bet is to strive for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Moderation is the key. It's certainly fine to splurge now and then, but maintaining a healthy diet makes you feel better and more energetic in the long run.


You can also increase your energy by starting and sticking to a regular exercise routine. You don't have to exercise vigorously. A brisk walk, water aerobics, or a bike ride combined with some weight training work well. Try to exercise several days a week, and make it a part of your routine.


Learn Something

Many senior citizens complain about boredom, but you don't have to be bored if you make a commitment to learning something new every day. You might simply read a good book or start a new hobby, such as painting or playing the piano. Consider studying a new language or taking a class. These activities fill your time and your mind while helping you fight depression, stress, and loneliness.


Socialize

You can also strengthen your mental health by socializing. Get involved in a book club, for instance, or a prayer group. Host or attend a card party. Plan an outing with some friends — a shopping trip, perhaps, or lunch at a favorite restaurant. The point is to be around other people. Visit, laugh, and enjoy yourself.
