Where Do I Start with My Therapy Journey?

Finding Focus, Setting Intentions, and Beginning Therapy with Compassion

Beginning therapy, whether for the first time or returning after a break can stir up a lot of emotions. It’s not uncommon to sit across from a therapist and think, “Where do I even begin?”

This question is more than okay—it’s actually a beautiful place to start. You don’t need to have your entire story organized or your goals perfectly outlined. Therapy isn’t about getting it “right.” It’s about showing up just as you are and letting the process unfold from there.


As a trauma-informed therapist, I work with adults who carry experiences of anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and long-held emotional pain. One of the first things we explore together is how to slow down, listen inward, and begin with gentle curiosity.


Why Beginning Matters


The beginning of therapy is more than an intake or a first step, it’s the foundation of a relationship. It's where trust starts to form, where your nervous system begins to test for safety, and where we co-create a space where your healing can take shape. You don’t need to come prepared with a plan. We’ll build that together.


Finding Your Starting Point: Self-Reflection as a Compass


Therapy begins with tuning into what’s happening inside of you right now. Below are some reflection questions to help you start locating yourself on this journey:


  • What’s been feeling heavy, overwhelming, or confusing lately?

  • Are there patterns in my life I keep repeating, even when I want to change?

  • What thoughts, memories, or sensations feel hard to carry?

  • When do I feel most disconnected from myself? When do I feel most alive?

  • What am I hoping will feel different in my life six months from now?

  • What would healing look or feel like to me—if I let myself imagine it?


You don’t need to answer all of these before starting therapy, but spending time with even one or two can gently open the door to deeper self-awareness.


Setting Intentions: A Collaborative Process


Intention setting in therapy is not a one-time task, it’s a conversation that evolves. It’s less about setting fixed goals and more about exploring what you’re longing for, what you’re protecting, and what’s ready to shift. Your therapist will walk with you in this process, helping you clarify your needs, values, and inner strengths.


Together, we might explore:

  • What does safety feel like for you, emotionally or physically?

  • Where in your life are you seeking clarity or direction?

  • What coping strategies have helped you survive—and what are you ready to reimagine?

  • How does your body respond when you talk about certain memories or relationships?

  • What parts of yourself feel misunderstood, silenced, or dismissed?


These conversations are deeply collaborative. I’ll offer insight from a trauma-informed, body-aware perspective and help you notice not just your thoughts—but your emotional responses, nervous system patterns, and inner dialogues. Over time, this builds the foundation for a therapy experience that is both purposeful and deeply attuned to your individual needs.


For Returning Clients: Reconnecting with Your “Why”


If you’ve been in therapy for a while, you may notice that your needs shift over time. The goals you began with might no longer reflect the space you’re in now. That’s not regression—that’s growth.


You might ask yourself:

  • What feels different in my life since I began this work?

  • Where am I still feeling stuck, or tender?

  • What have I learned about myself that I want to explore more deeply?

  • Am I ready to move from surviving to more fully living?


Therapy doesn’t have to look the same from one season of your life to the next. Giving yourself permission to revisit and revise your intentions is a vital part of long-term healing.


You’re Allowed to Start Slow

You don’t need to dive into the deepest material right away. In fact, sometimes healing begins with simply learning how to stay present with yourself—how to breathe through discomfort, how to recognize that you’re safe, how to build trust in the therapeutic space.

In this work, subtle shifts matter. They pave the way for deeper change.


You’re Not Behind

There is no right age or moment to begin your therapy journey. Whether you’re 25 or 65, whether you’re in crisis or simply curious, the invitation is the same: to show up, be seen, and begin where you are.


Setting intentions for therapy is an act of self-respect. It says: My healing matters. My story matters. I’m willing to explore what’s possible.
