Our Proven Therapy Process at Peaceful Living
What to expect from your first inquiry to meaningful, lasting change
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if you are unsure what to expect. At Peaceful Living Mental Health Counseling (PLMHC), we believe clarity creates safety. Our proven process is designed to meet you where you are, move at a pace your nervous system can tolerate, and support real, sustainable healing.
You are never rushed, pushed, or treated like a number. Every step is intentional, collaborative, and grounded in trauma-informed care.
Why We Use a Process
Therapy Works Best When There Is Structure and Flexibility
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all experience, but it also should not feel confusing or unstructured.
Our process balances:
-
Clear steps so you know what comes next
-
Flexibility to adjust based on your needs
-
A strong therapeutic relationship built on trust
This structure helps reduce uncertainty and allows you to focus on what matters most: your growth.

Discovery phase
(Initial Outreach Conversation)
When you first reach out for counseling, one of our team members will review:
-
why you’re seeking support
-
our specialized approach
-
which therapist is the best fit
-
scheduling, availability + rates
-
go over any questions you have
If all sounds aligned, we’ll schedule you for your Intake & Eval Sessions.
Intake + evaluation
(Average: 3 sessions)
The first 1-3 sessions are important for:
-
making sure you + your therapist are the right fit
-
gathering symptoms, defining goals + planning session frequency*
-
completing assessments to track progress
-
start getting history to build the treatment plan
-
building a solid connection with your therapist so meaningful change can take place
Treatment Planning
(Average 1 session)
After the intake process, your therapist will create a personalized treatment plan based on your goals and needs. All our treatment plans are rooted in trauma + neuro-informed care. Around session 4, you’ll:
-
Review the treatment plan
-
Make sure it’s what you want
-
Finalize schedule
-
Get started!
Treatment phase
(Average: 1 session/week, 90 day check-in cycles)
This is where the you start building momentum toward your goals! Our practice is built on the foundation of trauma and neuro-informed care. You + your therapist will engage in therapy that connects past experiences to present day symptoms, and use approaches that help rewire your nervous system.
Most clients attend weekly sessions to get the best results. Every 90 days or so, you’ll have a Treatment Review session with your therapist. During this session, you’ll
-
check-in + see how the process is feeling for you
-
re-take assessments to track progress
-
update goals as needed
-
determine next steps together
Graduation Phase
(Average: 1–2 sessions)
Once goals are met, you and your therapist will begin preparing for the transition out of consistent therapy.
You’ll review your growth, strengthen the tools you’ve built, and create a plan for continued success outside of therapy.
Maintenance Phase
(As needed)
Some clients choose to continue with occasional maintenance sessions after graduating from weekly therapy. These sessions provide ongoing support, check-ins, and guidance during future life transitions or challenges.
We find that a minimum of 1 session/week is necessary in order to gain momentum toward achieving your goals. That being said, life happens. you + your therapist will set a pace for progress that works for you and your life. graduation timelines will vary based on goals, consistency + commitment to the process.

How long does therapy last?
Therapy length varies based on your goals and needs. Some clients work with us for a few months, others longer. We regularly check in about progress and direction.
What if I am not ready for deep trauma work yet?
That is okay. Therapy always begins where you are. Stabilization and skill-building are just as important as processing
